Our Projects
Because of our ability to generate unique and creative solutions to complex process design problems, the company works closely with civil contracting partners, suppliers, and stakeholders to develop innovative and cost effective projects.
DONEMANA WWTW, CO. TYRONE
SWELL Project, Donemana was identified by the project team as having a great potential to improve water quality within the Lough Foyle catchment. Construction of a new treatment works at Donemana to ensure discharge standards compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations and NI Environment Agency discharge standards by designing & building a new RBC WwTW.
This project involves a detailed investigation into the causes of water pollution on both sides of the Irish border. For the first time ever, it will bring together key state-owned water companies from Northern Ireland and Ireland as it will be delivered by both NI Water and Irish Water, in partnership with the Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute, the Loughs Agency and East Border Region Ltd.
Warrenpoint WwTW. Co Down
Upgrade of the existing treatment works at Warrenpoint to increase the capacity to 21,000PE and to ensure discharge standards compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations and NI Environment Agency discharge standards by designing & building a new inlet works, a new FBDA aeration system and upgrading the MCC.This project involves a detailed investigation into the causes of water pollution on both sides of the Irish border. MULLANS WwTW, Co Down
Mullans WwTW Capital Works Contract in Co. Londonderry involved the design, construction, commissioning and testing of an upgraded Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) within the boundaries of the existing Mullans WwTW site.
Mullans WwTW required additional treatment process capacity to meet the current and projected loadings and to ensure compliance with the discharge consent.
The new Works included preliminary treatment comprising inlet flow screening; FFT interstage pumping station with integral storm water storage; Primary Settlement Tanks (PST); biological treatment process comprising modular Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC); Final Settlement Tanks (FST), tertiary treatment plant; sludge management and storage; process flows, levels and quality monitoring; ancillary processes to support the main process units and intelligent Motor Control Centre (MCC) with telemetry, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) control system.
NORTH COAST WwTW Odour Trial, Co Londonderry
North Coast WwTW Odour Trial involved an odour survey and process investigation of the sludge treatment at the North Coast WwTW.
The works commenced on 08 September 2016 and an initial site visit revealed significant corrosion and odour levels in the Sludge Dewatering Building and Administration Building. The main focus of the investigation was the concentration of hydrogen sulphide emissions which is both odourous and potentially fatal.
A sampling regime began in October 2016 and chemical dosing commenced November 2016. The first air survey stopped in January 2017 and then a follow up survey resumed September 2017. The investigation was completed in May 2017 and it was concluded that dosing ferric nitrate reduced the hydrogen sulphide levels to an acceptable level.
A further investigation was conducted to conclude the effect of temperature during warmer summer months on hydrogen sulphide emissions and also the relationship between sludge retention times and H2S.
Annacloy WwTW, Co Antrim
Annacloy WwTW in Co. Down involved the design and construction of a 1261 population sewage scheme for the village of Annacloy and Kilmore.
The works involved the phased decommissioning & demolition of an existing WwTW, phased removal of extended units & design construction & install of new WwTW. The WwTW was designed for 1261 PE, FFT 610 m3/d & consent of 20:30:8 (BOD:SS:NH3-N).
The new WwTW consisted of the existing activated sludge plant being replaced with a Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) treatment system. After the primary Settlement, the flow was split into 3 No. Kee Process Rotating Biological Contractors before treatment within the Final Settlements.
Sludge from the Primary Tank & Settlement Tank is automatically returned using a pump system to the sludge holding tank and exported offsite.
FOUR ASHES, West Midlands
Four Ashes Pumping Station in West Midlands, England involved the mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning of a pumping station.
With the recent construction of a large manufacturing facility in the West Midlands, Water Solutions were asked to assist in designing a wet-well solution, to address the high water table on site, and protect a series of underground pits containing critical plant. As the water table on site is very high, the wet-well solution required high-power 30KW pumps to successfully move the large volumes of water present to a purpose built storage lagoon. From there, the excess water would be slowly released back to a nearby canal using a specially designed flow control valve housed in an underground chamber between the lagoon and canal.
The mechanical and electrical installation included 3 No. Sulzer submersible sewage pumps Type XFP 305J-CB2, DN 300mm Pipework, Guide Rails, Foot Valves.

BALLINTOY WwTW, Co Antrim
Ballintoy WwTW Capital Works contract in Co. Antrim involved the design, construction, commissioning and testing of the works associated with a replacement Wastewater Treatment Works and a new Wastewater Pumping Station on new green field sites.
The new WwPS includes a submersible pumping station incorporating wet well with emergency and SDD storage, valve chamber, overflow screening, discharge to outfall and a new pumping main. This WwPS pumps forward Formula A flow to the new WwTW.
The replacement WwTW includes preliminary treatment comprising inlet screening and flow balancing; storm water management and storage; Primary Septic Tanks (PST); biological treatment process comprising modular Rotating Biological Contactors (RBC) and Final Settlement Tanks (FST); tertiary treatment; process flows, levels and quality monitoring; ancillary processes to support the main process units and intelligent motor control centre with telemetry; Programme Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) control system.
AGHAGALLON WwTW, Co Antrim
Aghagallon WwTW in Co. Antrim involved the upgrade of a 1632 population sewage treatment scheme for the village of Aghagallon. The previous works was a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) and the works were converted to a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) which uses combined floating mixed media fixed film reactor that has a given volume of media in the reactor to permit the growth of carbonaceous and nitrifying bacteria. The former MBR works was capable of meeting the discharge standard but was not capable of passing the required flow through the process.
Flows from the MBBR Aeration Tanks enter the Final Settlement Tanks (FSTs) via the Existing Collection Chamber and the FST Distribution Chamber, where they are split equally for distribution over V notch weirs, onward to 2 no. reedbeds
The Common Reeds (Phragmites Australis) has the ability to transfer oxygen from its leaves and out via its root system in the gravel bed. This encourages micro-organisms that digest the pollutants in sewage to colonise the area. The sewage effluent flows through this zone and is treated by the micro-organisms.
KILMORE PS, Co Down
Kilmore – Annacloy WwTW rationalisation contract in Co. Down involved the design and construction of a 381 population Pumping Station for the village Kilmore.
The existing wastewater treatment works at Kilmore has been demolished and replaced with a submersible pumping station that transfers raw unscreened sewage 2.6 km to Annacloy WwTW for treatment.
Flows arrive at the Kilmore PS from the Gravity Inlet. The pumping station incorporates storage [23.3m3]. Flows in excess of the forward flow (9.32 l/s) pass to the Overflow Screen Chamber, via a static screen and storm overflow to the local watercourse. Flows are pumped by duty/standby pumps to the new Annacloy WwTW reception chamber.
Kilmore PSwas initially a small Waste Water Treatment Works and as part of the contract Water Solutions Ireland had to devise and execute a phasing plan to keep the existing Waste Water Treatment Works operational while constructing the new pumping station in preparation to pump flows to Annacloy WwTW.
